Marine Barracks - Pearl Harbor, History Update 7/13/00

The Barracks, as we knew it, does not exist any longer.  Smedly Hall (our barracks) is now housing Sea Bees. The pull up bars are gone...replaced by a picnic table, bbq grill and a small shed.  The Guard Shack is now a public affairs office for the Navy.  The PX is now a Navy Environmental Engineering Building.  Oh, Puller Hall (Housed the Chow Hall, the CO's , XO's and Sgt. Major's office S-1, S-2, S-3) is closed.  Not sure what they use it for.  Those shiney brass handles on the doors are now faded.  The Flag pole (where we had those beautiful sunset parades and retirement ceremonies) looks weathered. Mama Sans' Barber shop and the Cleaners is gone.....they bulldozed them down to create parking spaces.  The Ammo Bunker is also gone. Remember that pool and basketball hoops next to the CO's house?  Well, they rooted all that up....replaced it with grass.  Quicks Pub is still in tact...looks just like we left it, except that the oversized goldfish and that artificial pond in the back doesn't exsist any longer.  Remember supply (w/Harry Tanaka)?  The Navy has that for somethign else too.  The Brig is at Ford Island.  No need to take the ferry to Ford Island now.  They built a bridge off of Kam Highway (next to Arizona Memorial) that will take you right onto the island.   There's still so much to tell you guys but I will continue another day.
