Kenitra Naval Air Station was first known by the name of Port Lyautey Naval Air Station. The City of Port Lyautey was located just outside the main gate. The city was founded by the French General Lyautey. Morocco, at the time, was a French possession ande there was plenty of animosity between the French and Moroccans. The Moroccons ruler, Mohammed V was in exile.
During the 50's, the base was an Ammo Dump for the 6th Fleet, also having an air field and facilities for airplane repair. The French had an air facility there as well . US Marines were the security for the base, as well as some Marines used as French interpreters at the main gate to process all foreign nationals entering the US Base. Just prior to the 60's the country was liberated from the French. The King, which was in exile, returned to his free country via Port Lyautey Naval Air Station. The City of Port Lyautey was soon renamed Kenitra. The Base name was changed to Kenitra shortly there after, as well. The Base was known to be a beautiful duty station with an 18 hole golf course .
