I was stationed at the Marine Barracks, Naval Air Station, Sandford, Florida during 1963 and 1964. The primary duty of the barracks' Marines was to guard the base which was home to the Atlantic Fleet's, heavy bombers. These planes, Sky Warriors and Vigilantes, have since been retired and the base closed. I would love to hear from other Marines who served at the Marine Barracks, NAS Sandford, during this period. I arrived in Sanford just before Christmas 1960, and remained there until I was transferred to Camp Lejeune in the spring of 1962. I don't remember the name of the Major who was the CO but I do remember that Shelly Wiggins was the 1st Sergeant, CPT Mullins was the XO, and 1LT Mannix was the Guard Officer. I also remember the names of a number of the enlisted personnel.  I was discharged from the Marines in 1963 -- not much going on in the Corps at that time -- and joined the US Army Special Forces. I served with the 6th and 7th Special Forces Groups (Airborne) at Fort Bragg and the 5th in Vietnam. While in Vietnam, I fought with Detachment A-343 at Duc Phong Special Forces Camp and during my second tour served with Mobile Guerrilla Force Detachments A-303, A-304, and Detachment B-36 Project Rapid Fire (Special Recon) at Ho Ngoc Tao and Trang Sup. I was shot in the head on July 18, 1967 and returned to Buffalo to attend college. In two weeks, I'll be retiring from the USDOL and have published three books on my experiences in Vietnam -- No Greater Love (Republished as Blackjack-34), Mobile Guerrilla Force, and Blackjack-33.
