Cpl. William R. Hammersmith, 71 - 73
guysinger3@attbi.com
Cpl. William R. Hammersmith, served at Marine Barracks, Rodman Naval Support Activity, Panama Canal Zone, from December 1971 - June 1973. Interested in hearing from any Panama Marines to share stories about serving in Panama. The Barracks was my first and most interesting duty station. Since the Canal has been turned over to Panama, it seems we have a responsibility to do what we can to help create a place to remember what it was like to serve in the Canal Zone. I'm looking forward to following this site and hearing from any other Panama Marines. Semper Fi, Bill Hammersmith

I was stationed in the Canal Zone 1964-66. I arrived in Panama in February 1964, right after the riots (January 9, 1964). I spent 10 months at MCB Rodman standing the front and back gates (back gate open in daytime) at Rodman Naval Station, the gate at Marine Barracks (Naval Ammo Dump) and roving patrol behind post 5 (in the jungle). I went to Fort Amador for 8 months and stood the main gate and walking patrol in "officer's country and NCO Quarters". I then went to Summit and stood the gate and patrolled the antenna field (good chow at that site). We constantly rode the "Non-Allied vessels" (Russian & Cuban) through the canal.....some.....boring duty. Had a good time in Panama and would like to talk with others that served there. Semper Fidelis to America!

Looking for former Marines who were stationed at Rodman during this period. Judging from all the sites pertaining to Panama it continued to be a great duty station until turned over to the Panamanians. I'd really like to hear from Jim Waner, an old golfing buddy. Did the Navy course across from the Big House exist after 65? Semper Fi to all.

I passed through Rodman a couple of times but was one of the outcasts at 3rd guard on the Atlantic side from '47 to '49 Coco Solo NAS. I am in touch with at least 3 others from that era but would love to hear from more.

I was a Marine L/Cpl at Marine Barracks Canal Zone from 1972-1974. Enjoyed my stay there as a 17 year old would. I am 49 years old now and look back on those days with fondness, remembering all of the Marines I was stationed with and wondering what became of them. I went into Law Enforcement after I left the Marine Corps and retired as Chief of Police in a small City in Alabama. I now have 3 grown children and 4 grandchildren, I would like to hear from former Marines. I have been in contact with L/Cpl Al Apel who was stationed in the CZ during the same time as I was. I speak to him often over the past 3 years and he is currently a bus driver for the NYC Transit Authority in New York.

I was stationed at Rodman and Summi 1965 - 1966. I remember very little of this time inmy life. I'm 57 now. I was a Lance Corporal and took care of the fleet, the Doberman and I do remember the Bamboo Room stairs and a beautiful Panamian Girl that a Corporal took away from me. He had a car some how. I would like to hear from anyone that was there at that time.
