At home here in Texas, would like to hear from anyone that was there when the Barracks closed or from anyone that was stationed there at anytime. Always remember to walk your post from flank to flank and take no sh*t from any rank! Semper Fidelis!!!

Was there 11-61 to 1-63. Great duty station. Hated the 12-4 on the rear gate. The armored car ride to pick up the payroll at the bank in Portsmouth was always laced with fun conversation about hijacking the payroll. Probably the only duty station where Marines ate lobster for breakfast. The mess sargent refused to cook them, said he didnt want to go to jail. Finally the Major put a stop to our unauthorized menu. I would like to return someday just to see the old barracks. I have a nice 8x10 bw photo of several of us being promoted in front of the sign on the front lawn. That photo hangs on my office wall. Anyone out there want to write and exchange "war stories" please feel free.Anyone remember eating hotdogs at GILLEYS wagon on the town square? They were delicous about 1 Am after Barbs or the Honey Bee closed. Semper Fi!!

I was stationed at the Portsmouth Naval shipyard Marine Barracks, May 1952 until March 53. I am looking for someone that was stationed there from Lincoln, New Hampshire, William Hurcome. I stood watches in the hospital main gate and second gate. I also drove a bus to the rifle range Wakefield Massachusetts.

K.J. Santana (E-2 & E-3), 1980 - 1982
santana4@sbcglobal.net
I was stationed at Mar Bar PNSY from 1980-1982. Some of my fondest memories include 1. Receiving a Meritorious Unit Commendation (MUC) and 2. Getting pulled over driving, on then, V.P. George Bush's private runway at Pease AFB, while he was at his home in Kennebunk Port. We had just left the airman's club, it was a foggy Halloween night in ' 81. unclepreb@hotmail.com
I was at MB PNSY, Guard Platoon 2nd, and 3rd Sections. I was with Santana, when we pulled up to Air Force Two. We were lost and had been drinking at the E Club AFB. The SP's held M16's to are heads, and carded all of us before letting us go on are merry way. Nothing ever happened to any of us out of that. Santana save me from a DUI, when the Kittery Police followed my to the back gate, he kicked them of the post. Saved my skin. Thanks Bro. The Kittery Cops were so mad that the CO, Maj Welsh, invite the Chief of Police to the 1981Marine Corps Ball to keep the peace. I will always remember this 1st duty station as the best times of my military career. I have also kept in contact with Sgt Campos, the Armor from 1979-1982 who now lives in Las Vegas. Hey to: Sonny, Buck, Drew, Mike Mosley, Eddie Valentine, Bill Molannard, Ken Anderson, and back gate Sue. "Semper Fi" Uncle Preb

One of my duty stations in 1968 was the Marine Barracks at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (SDSO). Over the last few years the barracks have been in my dreams. The buildings, rooms and golf course bring different people and events that happened there. How/where can I view any pictures of the barracks rooms or golf course. Kind of silly, but pictures my give me more names and events to remember, I have gone to web sites, Naval Shipyard Portsmouth, Virginia and Marine Barracks but still no luck. Any photo would be very welcome. Semper Fi

Lou Famiano, 1961 - 1962
lfamiano@insightbb.com
My name is Lou Famiano. I was stationed at Portsmouth Marine Barracks - Guard Company in November of 1961 to December of 1962. As Floyd White wrote in his message, I also remember the Bank guard duty - riding in the back of that armored car. I also recall the lobster fest on Sunday mornings....it was "showtime" for the enlisted. I was a range coach for the Marines at Fort Devens when we had to go there and re-qual with the M1 rifles. The Army could not understand the positions and stage of fire sustained by the Marines to qual with the M1 rifle. They treated us pretty good there at Devens. I remember playing football for the Barracks, I have a picture of the team. If I can find it, I'll have it posted. Like to hear from anyone who was stationed there the same time I was, or any Marine who served there. Semper Fi

Cpl David Han Reuschling, April 1985 -
October 1987
HanDR@mfr.usmc.mil
I arrived at MarBar, PNSY as a Pvt and left as a Cpl. I still have my old photo album from there. Recently, I have Arthur Trade, was a Cpl back then in 1987. He was with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 23d Marines in San Bruno, CA. I heard that then Cpl Glymph was working as the enlisted 03 monitor for a while. I don't know what happened to him since then. Oh and I saw then 1st Lt Stillwell back in 1995 at Quantico. He was a Major and working as one of the Company Commanders for The Basic School. I then ran into Major Stawicki at the O Club on MCAS El Toro in 1996. Last I heard, Cpl Paul Bell was working for the Army National Guard as Full Time Staff in New Hampshire. Cpl Joseph Willard is a high school history teacher working in Maryland.
Wow! I saw some familiar names on this board. And yes, I definitely remember the Snake Hill Lounge - still have the pictures to prove it. Remember Marianne? Or how about Tracy? Anyone heard from Mike Mazzarella or Stephen M. Richards? Last time I saw Richards was when we both were stationed at 1/8 in Camp Lejeune back in 1989. I am married now and living in Pacifica, California. I changed my name to David Han. My phone number is (415)699-0963. Semper Fidelis!

Thomas Gray, Brig Inmate, 1957 - 1958
tommy@toast.net
I was in the Brig at Portsmouth New from 1957 untill 1958. A total of 13 months for something I didn't do. Most of the guards that I took orders from were pretty nice and some were not, they just thought they were bad asses. I fought on the inmates boxing team and spared with a couple of the guards for a few rounds. I was in the Coast Guard and then transferred to Boston while awaiting my appeals. The appeals court found that I had been convicted for something that someone else did. I was discharged with an honorable recommended for reenlistment in 1959. My thanks to the guards that believed in me and my story. Simper Fi to the guards and Simper Parades to all from me and the Coast Guard.

MgySgt Jim Leather USMC Ret., 1953 - 1955
MGYSGT@aol.com
I was assigned as SgtMaj MB Portsmouth, NH upon my return from Korea in Sept 1953, relieving SgtMaj Darvie Pugh. I served under two Commanding Officers- LtCol Greenough followed by Major Leland L. Patrow. The Junior officers of the MB were Captains Johnson, Farrell and Grace. SNCOs I can recall, were MSgt Hefner, GySgt Kinney, GySgt Chaney SSgt Fields. We had a MB Pistol Team that participated in various matches throughout the New England area with fair results. Monthly Bingo Games were held in the mess hall. We had a PX on the second deck, also a small tailor shop operated by a civilian named Cruz. During this period security was of utmost importance. The Nautilus, top secret first atomic submarine was being outfitted for duty. This put a great deal of pressure on all of us marines guarding the Shipyard. No one was waved through the gate with a salute. Each and every person was required to present their ID card to the sentries, even the Admiral from Boston who issued the regulation, and my six day old son, born at the USNH, on his trip home. Another duty we were assigned was to dispatch armed guards to Fort Kent, Maine to pick up deserters, who were apprehended in Canada by the RCMP and kicked across the border, and return them to our little Brig for processing. I finished my tour at MB in 1955 when I received orders to I&I Staff 5th Supply Co USMCR Huntington NY.
