I  had the real privilege of serving as the XO, Marine Barracks, Hawaii from mid 1989 through 1 July 1991, at which time I retired with 32 years of service.  While I was there, many additions were made to enhance the Barracks.  ALL of these efforts were made by the Marines and they certainly deserve lots of credit for making Marine Barracks, Hawaii one of the real "Jewels in the Crown".

Barracks duty could be quite tedious, however, all hands did a remarkable job and can take pride in their many accomplishments. As I recall a number of things were done, including: Sending over 20 Marines to the Airborne Course at Ft. Benning. Marines completing qualification for the Scuba badge. The Mess Hall being selected at the Best Small Mess Hall in the Corps. Roughly 10% of the Marines being sent to participate in Operation DESERT SHIELD / DESERT STORM (Note: It seemed like I was badgered daily by most everyone. All wanted to volunteer to go, which I expect was true at every Marine duty station)

Off-duty education was pursued by many. Duty and Off-duty events were engaged in on Oahu, as well as the other islands. Charity work was done (work at a local school, among other things) 10K races were run. A number of Marines completed the Air Assault Course at Schofield Barracks. Combat Skills, Physical Training, Weapons Training were conducted with a high degree of vigor. Barracks NCOs attended the NCO Academy and often finished in the top 10%, including 1st on one occasion.

Lots of ceremonies and parades were conducted....and always with style and crispness. LCpl Bourchers was killed in the line of duty at the Main Gate at CINCPACFLT.  His death was a real sadness, but certainly emphasized the danger of being a Marine.  The Main Gate was renamed in his honor with Navy and Marine Flag Officers, along with very many others in attendance.  His family was flown to Oahu to be there for the ceremony. It was conducted with dignity and respect.  Note:  The civilian thug that killed him was convicted of murder.  It, as most will recall, a random act of violence.  The killer had never met LCpl Bourchers.

The were very many things done at Marine Barracks, Hawaii that all reflect in a most positive way on those that served there.  While it no longer exists, the memory of duty done, and done very well, will never fade. Those that remain on active duty that served there were, I think, better for it.  Those who moved on to the civilian world, or retired, remember it as truly a "class act"....Marine Barracks, Hawaii.

Sad to hear the Barracks closed down. I had the pleasure to served there with Capt. Sanchez in supply and Harry. I thought the enlisted club was know as the globe and anchor? Many a nights we made our way back to the Barracks after closing and crossing the parade grounds. Left in 77 and became a recruiter instead of a DI due to a broken ankle in a field meet (bull in the ring). Enjoyed my tour and had the pleasure to serve with SgtMaj Kellog when he was a Gunny and was presented with the Medal of Honor at Pearl Harbor. How I miss the sunset parades.

Devil Dogs!! Good to read your entries! I served with the Marine Barracks from 1990-1992, originally at Guard Company Wahiawa and then Guard Company Pearl Harbor. I can still vividly recall those late-night REACT drills. Sometimes I’d give anything to relive some of the experiences we had, including rappelling down the waterfalls in the rainforest behind Wahiawa (one of our many covert “off-duty” liberty missions), skydiving off the coast of the north shore, and scuba diving/snorkeling all over the island. I tell everyone that the Marine Corps was good to me. Who could ask for a better place to get stationed than Oahu, Hawaii?!? Take care in all that you do and remember, Semper Fi!!! (I have contact info for Steve Klopp, Tom Fuehrer, Tony Gipson, Donny Pauley, Mark Miller, and Barry Gnatek)

Cpl. Thomas R. Fuehrer 1989-1991, Guard Company
Fommy@aol.com

Fellow Marines, It is my distinct honor to place my message among yours. I was station at Guard Company Pearl Harbor from December 1989 to late 1991. During that time I started as a simple gate guard and worked my way up through the ranks before finally reaching the position of Sergeant of the Guard. Hard to believe that at the ripe young age of 20 I was in charge of approximately 16 combat ready Marines ready to rain all hell on anyone stupid enough to even look at CINCPACFLT in an unpatriotic manner  :-) . Ahhh, those were the days.

I also have the pleasure of saying I am a member of the notorious Taxi Cab 5 (Long story, e-mail me and I'll tell ya more). Myself, Mark Davis, Troy Gruza, Barry Gnatek and Paul Mastracco, being the merry young lads we were, spent our evening starting riots with the squids at the pearl club (The Green Door was shut down long before I got there), raiding Waikiki bars and streaking naked down the beaches. Needless to say we had our friends Jack Daniels and Jim Beam along for the ride :) .

But after Pearl Harbor and going over to Kaneohe Bay to 2/3 for a trip to Oki, I decided to call it quits. Not a regret in the world and I wouldn't change a thing. The grunts just weren't for me. The one and probably biggest thing I do miss about the Corps is the brothers I served with. True men in my book and I'd still fight a war with them today.

I now live back home in Orlando FL where I work as a Deputy Sheriff. It's a career that I use my Marine training and discipline on a daily basis. If any of you are in the area, feel free to drop me a line. We have this place down hear called Disney World. I hear it's pretty cool  ;-).

If you missed my MBPH reunion in 1995 at Panama City Beach, you missed a good one. Marines in attendance were-Dave Chaney, Joe Cross, Mark Davis, Tony Gipson, Barry Gnatek, Steven Jack, Paul Mastracco, Clarence Natto and Dan Parker. I'm hoping we can do it again soon. I hope everyone is well and as always. God bless America and Semper Fi

I was lucky enough to be stationed at Guard Company Pearl Harbor from January 1991 during the first gulf war, where I was promoted from Pfc through Cpl. We reported in on a Thursday and started standing duty on Monday. So much for the three weeks "On the job training." Most of the senior Marines as well as those that reported a week after me were sent to the combat replacement company. My memories of watching CNN all hours of the night, wondering when we would be sent to war are very vivid, but that call never came as it has for the young Marines of today. All of us in the civilian world now know how well trained those Marines are and that they will do our country proud. I spent a little over two years at Pearl guarding gates, re-fueling a sub, scuba diving (thanks to Gunny Foxworth), and being the best Marine I could be. I went on to Bravo Co. 1st Battalion 3rd Marines and deployed to Oki, as most do. I now live in Minnesota just south of Minneapolis. Semper Fi.

woods_wizard@yahoo.com

Hello to all. I was stationed at Guard Co. Pearl Harbor from 1982 to the end of 1983. I then went to Lima Co 3/3. I left the Marines in 1986 as a Cpl. As I sit here now I have very mixed emotions about MB Pearl Harbor. My 1st emotion is, to glamorize it, and say how great it was, but that would be less than truthful.

What I do remember is this: Col Dubie "The day they legalize pot, we will all go sit under the trees and smoke it together. But till then I will not tolerate it in my command.", Sgt/Maj Kellogg, what can I say….., 1stSgt Collins was a very fair and good Marine. Gunny Holding was a crazy mother. He would spray mace in his Copenhagen before he chewed it. He was a fair and good marine. We missed him when he left us. Treated us as Men. Even if he did take are doors., Sgt Konopa was a F-ing kiss ass that knew nothing about the reel Corps. When I left he had been at MB over 4 years and was still a boot. I think he was afraid to go to the reel Marines over in K-Bay. Sgt Barker was one F-ed up individual. I think he did a lot of damage to some young men that needed guidance not abuse. We had all gone through boot camp we didn’t need his crap of trying to make MB the MCRD of the Pacific. I remember when we herd that Johnson had shot and killed Tishman playing Russian roulette. I wonder if he’s out of jail yet. Or when Skerkawitz busted his hand on Erlbecks face. Erlbeck was a good friend. He and Toamula used to eat the berries out by the main gate. They called them "Moc Berries". If any one knows any thing about Erlbeck please let me know. There was fix-it Finch, and That small sub human Waldrop that got busted for taking his 45 in to the Barracks and pointing it at his roommate. My 1st roommate Lampkins, the command thought he was a shit bird but he had just been at MB to long. He would have been a good Marine in the FMF Rooster- a low down lying C.S. that would steel any thing from any one. I remember a very big fight we all got into at the E-club because of him. Or how about Moon…. What a bird.

Some of the good guys that made it out and to the field. Vasquez, Torrino, Wattly, Inskeep, Reed, And a lot of others. We had fun and did our jobs well. I just had to get that out… thanks. If any one would like feel free to email me… we can talk about the waves from up on the hill or that blond WM from the chow hall. Regards, Ralph

Michael Busansky, 1990 - 1993
Captain, Guard Officer, Guard Company PH, later - Supply Officer, HQ Company
Busansky.mike@mail.navy.mil

This was my last duty station before I was involuntarily separated.  I had a reserve commission and failed to get augmented.  I remember my years there with fondness.  I eventually lucked out and got to move into one of those huge white houses that some of the Marine Officers got to live in.  I remember collecting the wisdom teeth of some of the young Marines from the guard company when they got them yanked.  I kept them in a jar on my desk.

Other memories......    Running the Honolulu Marathon with the Sgt from Legal. Getting in trouble with AF MPs when a training exercise got out of control and we wandered into restricted areas. Getting in trouble for loud chanting platoon runs on base (and Hickam) in the wee hours of the morning. Calling react drills at odd times. Sneaking up on my guard posts through the back gate to make sure no one was sleeping. Getting plastered with the Rifle Team at the "e-club" and being helped to my front door by Sgt Rodriguez. Talking to the old Marines who came to visit during the 50th anniversary of the December 7th attack. Standing up the special platoon that handled the nuclear submarine refueling/defueling security mission at the shipyard. Sending a Sgt with a remains repatriatian team to Viet Nam (included a memorable layover in Bangkok. Birth of my daughter in the Pink Hospital (Tripler)  One of my Marines and his pregnant wife beat me there by minutes and took the last wheelchair. A nutty SSGT that had an alcohol problem.  He eventually took his wife hostage and holed up in his house. Gee, no wonder I was passed over, but I had fun. Now I'm an over paid and over educated civilian employee of the Navy! Semper Fi

Arrived MB Barber's Point initially.  Cpl Kelly and Sgt Sanchez were my squad and platoon NCOs.  Couple guys I remember were Swancer, Pedroza, Pfaanensteil, and Eck.  Transferred to West Loch and worked for Maj Schlack in admin.  With seven months left of my tour went to Pearl Harbor for the remainder.  Transferred to 1/1 (Camp Horno), got out, went to school, and now I'm a Lieutenant Colonel.  Spent most my time in aviation as a Maintenance Officer, both fixed and rotary.  Deployed twice to the gulf. Just got back from 10 months of Kuwait, Iraq, Djibouti, and Kenya.  Heading to MARCENT now and probably back there one more time for 179 days or so. Will most likely retire in a couple more years and figure out what I want to do once I grow up.  Units/locations attached: MB (already mentioned), H&S 1/1 Campen, 4th LSB Tacoma, HMH-461/H&MS-26/6th MEB ACE HQ MCAS New River, OMD Iwakuni, SOMS/MALS-11/MAG-70/3rd MAW/VMFA-323 El Toro, SERF/NAPRA Atsugi, I MEF Campen, MALS-46 Miramar, MARFORRES New Orleans, 24th Marines Kansas City, Marine Logistics Command (MLC) Kuwait/Iraq, CJTF-HOA Camp Lemonier Djibouti, U.S. Embassy Nairobi Kenya.  Guess MB made an impression on me...and so did the people.  Will miss it once I leave, I'm sure.  Semper Fi to all that served.  We are truly a brotherhood.

Trying to locate some Marines I served with at Pearl in 1962. Frank Rosenberry, Fred Hovey, Fred Chritlow and Fred Hiedcamp. I was in the navy, sent to work in the Mess Hall at Marine Barracks. The Mess Hall fed about 50 or so Navy guys who worked in the warehouses near by. So for 4mos. from March until late June or early July 62 I was there. The guys accepted me and we had a ball. We were all 18 or 19. If any of you see this and remember me, please write. Everyone called me swaby. Hope to here from you.

Looks like a few of the old timers found there way on this site? What’s up Tom Fuhrer, Chris Limbert and Dan Parker? Looks like I missed a reunion in 1995? Hopefully Panama City is still standing and didn’t suffer as much damage as Waikiki did when we were there!  The Taxi Cab 5 was before my time but hey Jack “Who’s Payin’”? Anyone up for a scavenger hunt? I do have some great memories of the Barracks. I ran into a guy at a friends 4th of July party who went to OCS w/ Sgt Q., small world. He said he was the oldest Marine to ever go though or something like that..hat’s off to ya Sgt Q. He talks to Sgt Q. about once a month so I told him to mention my name (he might cringe). Anyone else have a reunion in mind? I’d definately be up for hosting one in sunny San Diego if all you east coasters can make it past the hurricanes. If not let’s do it somewhere else. I ran into Scott Johnson while I was up in the Bay Area about a year ago. He looks EXACTLY the same (even a regulation haircut). When I got out I visited Muck when he did his ‘ahem’ duty at Pendleton. Hindsight is 20/20 isn’t it?  Shout out to Stracco, Jack, Limbert, Natto, Gnatek, Gipson, Chaney, Parker and anybody else reading this! Anyone heard from the “other” side Szachnitowski, Weingarten? Also Ortiz, Mendoza, Turner, Velasquez? When I got out I went to work at Home Depot for a few years, then as a project manger for a custom builder in Malibu and now I’m working as a real estate broker, married w/ no kids as of yet. If anyone plans on being out in California give me jingle. Semper Fi-Go Bush, etc, etc. etc..

PFC  James Tucker, 1983 - 1984
jzt2@cox.net

Thank you Ralph for your post to this site. It showed something that was unfortunately missing from Barracks lower command, Integrity. I don't think that Sgt Barker even knows the meaning. Another word is Honor, which I am afraid was also a mystery to Kanopa, Barker and any of those who chose to spy, entrap, turn Marine against Marine as a means of promotion. Does Sgt Barker even know he has innocent blood on his hands? Emory Howard was my friend! he killed himself 18 years ago, in part due to the damage done by a complete lack of leadership. I am positive he is not the only one lost for no good reason. Hey guess what Sgt Barker I'm still here. I survived and I would so very much like to talk with you! You remember me Sergeant? I showed up at Marine Barracks after graduating Company Honor Man at I.T.S, remember? A perfect score 4.0, 4.0 300 PFTer and a 98.9 grade all I ever wanted was to be an infantry Marine. You need to remember because you took something from me...no not my integrity...not my Honor...not even my self respect. Do you remember what you did after the C.G.'s inspection in 83 where I was named outstanding Marine on post? No? not congratulations, no, not job well done. You put me on EMI for being late to base that morning. Did you ever even think about the fact that I lived in Waikiki and rode a motorcycle, it was pouring rain that morning I had my sea bag full of all my inspection gear strapped to the back of my bike, but I managed to make it there in one piece. That is not an excuse Mr. Barker that is an explanation, and a pretty good one at that, it would have been good enough for a good leader. Why did you do the things that you did? Remember out in the rain forest when you tried to hit me in the head with that C.S. grenade? You missed didn't you? I wish I could remember the name of that innocent Marine that got hit with that grenade, remember Sgt? It went off right in his crotch. I saw your eyes Mr. Barker, you were scared. Do you think that hurt? You were a platoon Sgt do you think that was a responsible thing to do? Man you were blinded by hate. Now here is the part you don't want to hear Sgt Barker! It wasn't me who left my motorcycle parked outside in front of your house while your wife was all alone, Moon borrowed my motorcycle! I have Honor, I would not do that! I never said a word about Moon to you, I took the full brunt of your hate, I was not that kind of Marine! All I ever wanted since I was a kid was to be an Infantry Marine!  I want ALL the certificates and other items taken from my locker back I earned them, taking away the paper will never take away the actions it took for me to get them in the first place! Any Marine that served 83,84 please feel free to contact me if YOU remember. Before I close I would like to mention that I do not think that anyone in the upper command knew about the things I speak of and I have nothing but respect for Col. M. Dube who bought me many a drink at the E-Club, and what can I say about Sgt Maj Kellogg I remember watching him PT and was in awe, what a Marine what a man, class act all the way. I am sorry if I sound bitter in
this posting. I mean no disrespect to the many , many Honorable Marines that served Marine Barracks Pearl Harbor, I just needed to get it off my chest. Semper Fi.
