Worked in office and also stood watch, participated in parades and honor guards. Great group of guys. I was on the main gate when the Thresher sunk. Also had the opportunity to spend a day on the USS Cosair. This was the last boat commissioned during World War II. It was never fully armed. We (5 of us) spent the day and dived 16 times. Major Linn was the commanding officer and First Sergeant Demar was he top enlisted man. The tour was great and left me with many fond memories.
In January 2001, I retired from the government. We moved to Martha's Vineyard in April 2001, and love living here.

I was station at Marine Barracks, New London, Ct. My name is PFC, Ray Gobbi. I was a guard at the gate, & honor guard, parades, etc. I was there from 1962 to 1964. I remember the USS Thresher, when it sunk. The Church on the base was cover with flowers. I was in the honor guard. In 1963 a Marine accidentally got shot at the gate by another Marine. His 45 went off by accident. The Navy use to take the Marines out in the Subs, 5 Marines out at a time & Dive 10 to 15 times. It took all day, gave us chow, etc. I am now retired from the Waltham Fire Dept in Mass. 32 years of service, living at Cape Cod in Yarmouth Mass.

Earl Martin, Sgt, 1967 - 1968

I was stationed New London in June 1967 through August 1968. My duty were standing gate duty and working as post one with the Officer of the Day. After all these the years, the system probably have changed. After being promoted to Sgt, I was sometime in charge as Cpl of the guard and some time Sgt of the guard. In the 1968 I was the Cpl of the Guard on duty when the tower, that the sailor use for submarine training, burn down, what a night. I had some good friend when I was there, Lcpl G. Pope was a very goodfreind. He married a young lady from New London named Judy. Some how I lost track of them. An other Marine I will never forget was Sgt. Willie Odom, he use to call himself Sweet Od, and he was from New Newark, New Jersey. When the bus left the base for New London, he and I was on it. I tried to get in touch with but the address had changed. James Patterson is another Marine I remember. he was from Washington DC. I've been living in the area of Washington DC since 1968. I think that's why I remember James. I am a Vietnam Veteran, before coming to New London. I spend 13 months and 2 weeks in the Nam, and after all these years I still have the Corps in my blood. Anyone who was on the Sub Base, that remembers me I would like to hear from you.
