As with most MBs there are lots of interesting stories about what we did that we shouldn't have done, and wonderful stories about the great Marines I served with.  As this appears to be the first message for this board I will just relate what left a lasting impression on me from my first day at the barracks. When I checked into the COG there was a sign or poster that was under a plastic desktop cover.  Even though the sign was upside down to me, I could make out what it stated, even though it was angled as thus........

      Proper - Prior - Planning - Prevents - Piss - Poor - Performance

I really enjoyed my time at Moffet, and with the guys I served with.  As it was during the Vietnam conflict we had our share of funeral details, and more than once I drove our CO when he went out to notify some family. Hopefully, some others will share some of the stories regarding the Main Gate, and pulling the colors. Oh, I did also open the East Gate because the VP of the USA was coming on board.  I remember the Naval Officer of the Day telling me to make sure I gave him a snappy salute.  Imagine, a Naval officer telling a Marine how to salute.

Richard D. Hunter here, I was at Moffett from 2-51 to about 11-51.... I was a Corporal at the time having been posted there after tour in Korea....I went through boot camp (Plt 10) in San Diego then to Camp Joe and the 11th Mar...Then onto Korea with the 1st Prov.Mar. Brig....Went through all the major campaigns from Pusan to Inchon to the Chosin...back again in 53 and discharged in 54....Had a great time at Moffett and since my home was in S.F. the liberty was the best....There was a time when another marine and I had the detail of posting and lowering the colors in front of the Ad Bldg......Well we missed the lowering one night and when we heard the call to colors bugle played over the base P.A. system we both huckle bucked out of the Barracks only to find the duty Naval officer had lowered the colors, had them gathered in his arms and was fit to be tied..But he was a nice guy about it and chewed us out in a nice "Officer and a Gentleman" way.

W. J. Mertz, 84 - 86
wjmertz@uneedspeed.net

I was stationed at NAS Moffett from 84 - 86. Fresh out of Infantry Training and Boot. As we all know we were not a true barracks but only a guard detachment from NWS Concord, but I am pleased to see that we got our own page. I know that my group was one of the last groups of marines there. We were in the process of training the squids to take over when I drew my orders to 3-1. The only noteworthy things that I can recall from my stay there was the death of one of the marines wives and a subsequent act of vandalism in the gym relating to the death. ... A very sad time to be sure. I was a Pall Bearer and can still see it all...it was the first time I ever got to wear my blues. I close my eyes and can still see the faces and even some of the names...
Cpl. Tangent ("Mertz! You and Rose got TMI after post")
Bob Kolstead
Skinny Smith
Scheffield ("It's all fuuuuucccckkked up SSGT")
Bennie Vasquez
Boo - Boo
Danny Rose (You still owe me money Danny)
Brabston
Cortez
Bates!!!!! (My Irresistible Bitch)
Hubbard!! (Was great to see you later down at MCRD San Diego again. You are still one of the top 5 marines I have ever known)
I can't recall all the names anymore but I still remember all of you... Semper Fi Guys!

I am trying to contact two former marines that were stationed with me at Moffett Field between the times of February 1955 and March 1956.  We were providing security, details and honor guard duty.  Their names are Sgt. John Collins and Cpl. G. B. Stevenson.  If anyone stationed there, has any knowledge of the whereabouts of these two mentioned above or any other Marines stationed there, please contact me. I was at Moffet shortly after returning home from Nam. Since I lived less than a hundred miles north of there, I was happy with the duty to say the least. I was very mechanical, and made more money in the parking lot on weekends than on my military pay. I was always fair though, keeping the guys cars running. I always had them get an estimate from town, then I'd do the job for half, plus a tool I may need or needed. I still have most of those tools today and value them highly!   I was on AUW for quite some time, most time spent as Patrol driver, little on East gate and Main gate. I have actually found two friends from there, but still looking for a black guy, Leotha Brooks.   Looking forward to hearing from anyone I was there with.   Semper Fi bros!!!
