I was stationed at the Marine Barracks, Hawthorne, Nevada from Oct 1948 to early July 1950. After a year in Korea with the Brigade and 1st Division I returned in July 1951 and was discharged there in July 1952. I stayed there and worked on the base fire department until 1961.
The photo in the memorabilia section from 1949 is, unfortunately, is not as large as it realy is. My scanner is not large enough for the whole picture, so some people are cut off. It does show however, Lt Col Olin L. Beal who went to Korea as motor transport officer of the division. He won a Navy Cross for going out on the ice in the Changin resevoir to recover army wounded from a convoy left behind by the 7th army division in their hasty retreat from the area.
He was a crusty old character much like Chesty Puller. His priorities were The Marine Corps, his gorgeous wife and the state of Texas.  Nobody dared mess with any of them in his presence.
